Are tinned veg any good for you?
I have always been under the assumption that tinned vegetables have no nutritional value and are not great to feed your family on. I recently had a conversation with someone who often uses tinned veg and says it is still good for you.
So I have looked into this to see what the actual truth is.
I managed to find this:
Canned fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with “higher-quality diet, lower body weight, and lower blood pressure.” Canned vegetables have just as much nutritional value as fresh vegetables and can taste just as good. ... They can save you time and money, and can contribute to a healthy eating style.
This led me on to thinking whether tinned and frozen food is more nutritious or less nutritious than fresh vegetables.
This is what I found:
Frozen and canned veggies can often be healthier than fresh vegetables because they are canned and frozen at their freshest. ... Canned and frozen vegetables may start out equally nutritious, but the processing makes a difference. Frozen produce is blanched (cooked in hot water quickly) and that affects the nutritional value slightly.
So I was wrong in my assumption. Tinned vegetables are absolutely fine to use as a healthy meal for you and your family.
